Big Bold Reds For Wine Drinkers This Autumn

If weather forecasters are to be believed, we’re in for a long, cold, winter this year. So find here rich and flavoursome tipples to warm you up this season.

Vina Maipo Classis Series Shiraz 2015, Chile, 12.0% abv.
Distinctive, chocolate, overtones without the heaviness of Antipodean brands make this wine a treat. Add in warm vanilla, and sharp, red fruit and you have a full bodied wine. The nose is fruity and the finish short. Pair with red meats and cheeses.

Vina Maipo Classis Series Merlot 2015, Chile, 12.5% abv.
The black pepper bouquet places this wine immediately in the southern hemisphere. And a soft finish of red cherries is fab with delicate red meats and light cheeses.

Get Vina Maipo wines from Tesco, Morrisons and Sainsburys at £4.80 – £9.99 RRP per 750ml bottle.

Baron Amarillo Rioja Reserve 2010, 13.0% abv.
The trademark herbaceous and oak nose translates into red berries, blackcurrant and a wave of sweet vanilla on the palate. A stalwart among reds, Rioja is great with Sunday dinners, and of course, alone. Buy from Aldi for £5.49.

Kooliburra Reserve Shiraz 2015, Australia, 13.5% abv.
This juicy glug is flavour packed from red berries and black cherry. Combine with the heaviness associated with Antipodean reds, and you’ll know what to expect. The finish is long and palpable. Enjoy alone or with rich lamb dishes. Amazing value at just £3.89 from Aldi.

Wm Morrison Western Australia Cabernet Sauvignon, 2013, 14.5% abv
The second of our Australian wines boasts a ruby, damson and blackcurrant palate, with marzipan overtones. Rated ‘E’ by Morrisons for body ‘fullness’. Accompany with seasonal lamb, or drink on its own. From Morrisons – RRP £7 per bottle.
