Fine Dining At The Meat Co. Restaurant

Venue and locale
Conveniently situated beside the busy Westfield shopping complex in Shepherd’s Bush and just a minute’s walk from the tube station, this two-level, plush restaurant of enormous proportions will appeal to many tiers of clientele, whether drinking cocktails at the two bars or enjoying a food feast. The seemingly endless tables include an outside balcony on the first floor restaurant. Décor is neither casual nor formal, striking a balance with comfy seating and functional chairs under muted lighting. A central island allows open plan viewing of food preparation, that’s if you’re not distracted by the extensive floor-to-high-ceiling wine racks partitioning the dining areas. No music was played, allowing conversations to be heard, and overheard!

Menu
While the name may suggest a carnivore’s haven, vegetarian and seafood dishes are many. Other meat dishes include lamb, chicken and halal. Steak lovers will adore the super aged meats dried for 30 days then wet again to produce a fine flavour. We sampled the Boerewors starter, a traditional South African seasoned sausage over a slab of pale polenta. For mains, the author enjoyed a hanging lamb skewer, which is a fragrant rod of sizzling chops on its own stand, just waiting to slide onto the plate. Pair with chunky chips or any of the side dishes offered and wash down with a wine from the extensive, international wine menu that includes champagne cooled in ornate buckets, and desert wines.

Crockery is white, convex shaped with a ‘hollow’ for food, while the glasses reflect aesthetic appeal through curvy profiles. Finally the desert platter of five sweets from the menu includes treacle cake, ice cream brownie, raspberry yoghurt, and chocolate fondant at a size for two to share.

Clientele and prices
We found the wait staff attentive and friendly without being overbearing. What started as a quiet evening livened up with visitors from shopping centre. We saw all age groups, demonstrating the ‘pull’ of this restaurant. All said, this is not a venue for the budget conscious. For instance, prices for a 200g steak can reach £50. We do recommended The Meat Co., if just for the experience. Our tip – the water carafes cooled our palates and tempered all the different flavours nicely.
