People affected by cancer across the UK can now receive specialist hair care advice in 102 salons as part of a partnership launched by TONI&GUY with Macmillan Cancer Support.

Strength in Style is now available in selected salons that are trained up to offer men, women and children affected by cancer specialist hair care, advice and support on the high street. Before the end of the year, the Macmillan team and TONI&GUY are hoping to have a further 50+ salons trained up nationwide.

One of TONI&GUY’s Strength in Style Consultants will be available on Macmillan’s Online Community (www.community.macmillan.org.uk) to answer your questions about the service and coping with hair loss on 16 March at 1-2pm. To take part you must become an online community member. Simply register at http://community.macmillan.org.uk.

Emma Chapman, Fundraising and Charity Manager from TONI&GUY says; “We’ve learnt that for some people hair loss can be one of the hardest parts of cancer treatment, so we’re very excited to provide such an important service to people affected by cancer in the local community.”

Staff on the programme have undergone intensive training to help them deal with the emotional and practical issues surrounding the sensitive nature of hair loss and hair thinning due to cancer treatment. This also includes specialist training on wig fitting and styling.

Sally Hill, Partnership Manager, Macmillan Cancer Support, says; “Our partnership with TONI&GUY is very important to us at Macmillan. Hair loss can have a huge impact on a person undergoing cancer treatment and their relationship with a hairdresser is extremely personal. Strength in Stylewill help us in our ambition to reach and improve the lives of people affected by cancer by helping to give them some confidence back throughout their cancer journey.”

Staff in TONI&GUY and essensuals salons across the UK will also be fundraising throughout the year to raise money to help Macmillan reach and improve the lives of even more people affected by cancer.

Kelly Osborne may be proud to sport her silvery strands, but a survey conducted by home hair colour brand LIVE Salon Style[1] confirms that UK women don’t feel grey is that great. 67% of women aged between 26-60yrs, claiming they would never want to be seen with grey hair.

At 27yrs old, Kelly Osborne maybe considered a little young to be silver-haired, but according to the survey of 1000 UK women, this is exactly the age the average woman finds their first sprinkling of white.

The primary reason women rated grey hair so unattractive, was because they believe it to be the most significant sign of ageing. Second only to having a wrinkly face, grey hair was felt to be more ageing[2] than “turkey” necks, slack jowls, saggy boobs and wearing frumpy clothing.80% of women surveyed also agreed that colouring their hair gave them a definite confidence boost.
