Festival Chic

Ever since we saw Kate Moss first parade her now infamous festival chic of super tiny shorts and waistcoat way back in 2005 at Glastonbury, festival fashion has become a whole new genre of fashion styling in its own right.

We don’t just go to music festivals for the music anymore, but instead approach it with the kind of rigorous wardrobe planning as though it were a fashion show in its own right. Now we now that Kate and Sienna and co probably don’t have to try very hard when it comes to attaining that effortless air of ‘cool’, but for the rest of us, here’s a little help...

V FESTIVAL

The Virgin V Festival is held every year in Chelmsford and Stafford and while it’s not for the most eclectic of music tastes, if pop’s your thing and you just fancy an easy going weekend with your favourite people, it’s the perfect festival for you. But its summer! This is no time for music snobbery! The sun is shining (we hope), the Pimms is flowing and you’ve slathered your legs with St. Tropez, so get them out with this cute and girly floral skirt from La Redoute, pair with a simple tee and these sandals, also LaRedoute, for simple and easygoing, yet fresh, festival chic.

CREAMFIELDS

Creamfields is for those of you who enjoy your music loud with a heavy bass and techno beats, and so your outfit needs to allow you the liberty to jump around in a crowd of thousands of people covered in sweat and, frankly, not caring because you’re having such a good time. These espadrilles from VivaLaDiva.com are perfect for padding around the fields in the sunshine.

And if you just happen to lose them mid jump, it doesn’t particularly matter because at only £19.99, and in a range of popping colours, they’re a bargain. We love this Miss Sixty draped tee, it’s cool and baggy yet still edgy with its muted print and with a pair of colourful shorts, like these from ASOS, and it’s the perfect summer dancing outfit. If you want to go the extra mile, why not try continuing the colour theme into your make-up with some fun false lashes or some bright neon eyeliner; MAC have a fantastic range.

BENICASSIM

If you’re lucky enough to escape to Spain’s hottest festival then you’re pretty much guaranteed sunshine, and (take the sun cream) very hot temperatures. Keep yourself cool but covered with a wide brimmed seventies hat, as seen on the catwalks of S/S 11, a beautiful maxi dress like this Topshop one and comfy sandals. Pile on the jewellery to complete a perfect boho summer look.

READING AND LEEDS

If you’re heading off to Reading or Leeds this summer get ready to unleash your inner rock chick. Now this is a simple look, but one that is not fully achievable unless you’re willing to adopt the ‘I don’t give a damn’ attitude to go with. We’re not saying down a crate of cider and throw yourself into some crowd surfing affair, but at least carry around an air of effortless, grungy chic as you make your way through sweaty crowds of tattooed men and girls desperate to catch a glimpse of the latest long haired rocker to grace the charts.

Simply throw on a Vintage band t-shirt (charity shops are a great place to start, and Oxfam often had amazing shops at the festivals when you get there) with some faded denim shorts, such as these renewed Levi 501s from Urban Outfitters and some quirky willies (like these fab cheap ones from Store TwentyOne). Trust us, you’ll definitely need those.

GLASTONBURY

And finally, the King of the festivals, where there’s something for everyone. Glastonbury is the festival to head for. Whether you’re a festival virgin or veteran you just know you’ll have a good time here. Keep your look relaxed and easy with these comfy dungarees from Store Twenty-One (only £20!), some gladiator sandals and a printed scarf in your hair as a turban, bandana, or headband.

And if you’re not heading off to a festival this summer, why not create your own! Get your favourite people round to your back garden, your favourite food on the barbecue and your favourite tunes on your iPod, and there you go; it’s the next best thing!
