22nd October marks an important day for thousands of people in the country as it is six months ‘til the London Marathon - and time to start training!

The countdown is on with just 183 days until the big race and, already, Google is reporting a huge spike in searches for ‘marathon training’: 5,400 people have made this search just this month alone.

Sales figures at Sportsshoes HQ have also shown an increase in people interested in preparing for the marathon. The Asics GT 2160 running shoes have been flying off the shelves as athletes race to get the correct sports kit to prevent any injuries when running.

If you want to FAIL at reaching your fitness goals, then stick to the following points. It surprises me how many people adopt some of these points, yet, still hope to achieve their fitness goals. They set themselves up to fail.

Poor goal setting  Poor accountability
Indifference  Poor planning
Poor personal responsibility  High stress load
Negative thinking  Inflexible approach
Poor quality training  Dehydration
Dislike of exercise  Poor nutrition
Exhaustion   

I have listed the points in the order I feel represents their level of importance, number one being the biggest faux-pas. This list is not exhaustive, but represents the most common failures I observe with people.

Barefoot running 

Since the 1960s athletes have been competing in races barefooted and, with the recent increasing wave of interest in barefoot running, many people have raced to purchase minimalist shoes and jumped, quite literally, feet first into the sport. The reason being that with natural, ‘shoeless’ running, the lateral edge of the human forefoot is the part which strikes the ground with the most force.

Running in padded shoes typically alters this as more emphasis is placed on the heel and the area towards the back of the foot – which has been claimed to cause more stress on the heel, knees and hips. Therefore many athletes became interested in the sport to strengthen the foot and help improve speed.
