Autism affects the lives of millions of people in the UK every day. It is an incurable, lifelong developmental disability that requires day-to-day support. Founded in 1962, the National Autistic Society provides a range of services to help people with autism and Asperger syndrome across the UK. This includes community programs and specialist education services for children and adults living with the disability. They also fund advocacy projects, the Autism Helpline and support programs for parents, family and carers. The NAS relies heavily on the support of its fundraising members and donors to continue providing these services. The benefits of NAS programs are praised by families living with autism. After a frustrating three years of doctor ‘s appointments and various assessments, Becky Rideout was finally advised that her daughter, Jessica, has autism. “There is so much misunderstanding about autism,†said Becky, who participated in the Women’s 5k challenge in 2009. “The NAS provides support and reassurance to families like mine.â€
