Seeking A Job? Got No Degree? No Problem!

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be bringing you a weekly article on finance and business savvy – from job hunting to what to say (or not to say) at the interview, to how to get that pay rise. Our first and second article highlights jobs and industries you don’t need to have a degree to enter.

Here is Part 1 of 2:

Did you know that a third of UK students have expressed regret at attending University?

According to the Office of National Statistics, 29% of graduates earn less than those that entered the workplace straight from college or via an apprenticeship. Indeed, the likes of Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Lady Gaga all pay testament to the idea that you don’t need a university degree to become a self-made million/billionaire.

So if the idea of discovering a profession that doesn’t require a degree seems like a daunting prospect, the experts at * Finance can give us the low down on what industry to build your career in.

Marketing
If you’re an ‘ideas’ person, this may be the industry for you. Note that entry level roles can begin at £18,000, however those that entered the industry through internships and persevered earned in excess of £45,000 by the time they reached their early 30s.

Entrepreneur
Born self-starter? Or maybe you’ve found a gap in the market or believe you have a ‘unicorn’ idea? Then perhaps entrepreneurship rather than a career in the office is your calling. Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates are both ‘college dropouts’ and quit the books to build an empire. Such a drastic decision not to be taken lightly, however if you are motivated and determined, now could be the time to start constructing your own empire.

Digital industry
If SEO, CRO, PPC and Adwords aren’t jargon to you, then you could be a ’techie’. In this fast-moving industry, it is arguable that once you leave university, what you’ve learnt becomes irrelevant, as new strategies are developed.
Though a life in the digitals-ville can begin with unpaid internships, a thirst for knowledge, a willingness to learn and hard graft can push your earnings above £50,000 annually.
