The Sparkling:
Asti Spumante Dolce DOCG, Italy, 7% abv
A deeeelightful palate of peach, mild sage and mellow plum. On the sweet and fruity side, this very drinkable fizz is best consumed on its own or with light dessert, as the flavour is easily overpowered. From 100% Moscato Bianco grapes. £4.69 from Aldi.
Organic Prosecco Costellore Organico, Italy, 11% abv
Dry sparkler with a honeycomb nose and pear and green apple palate. Gentle mousse, pair with white meat dishes. £5.49 from Aldi.
¡Hola! Meditteráneo Orange Spritz, Spain, 8.5% abv
This aromatised wine-based drink from Laithwaites’ Cava Producer features slow fermented sparkling wine and locally handpicked oranges. Add in signature spices and herbs and you have a classic, bittersweet aperitif. Definitely one not to mix with food. £9.99 from Laithwaites Wine. https://www.laithwaites.co.uk/product/%C2%A1hola!-mediterraneo-orange-spritz-nv/4435624
*For those preferring a milder drink Lidl have a range of ciders up to 5% abv. Here we see Pear infused variety that is very light on the palate. RRP £2.45 for 4x 440ml cans.
The Whites:
Picpoul de Pinet 2024, France, 12.5% abv
Bone dry white from the Languedoc region, and made from grapes of the same name. The strong, floral nose precedes a citrus and herbal palate that leaves a fresh finish. Lying between Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio. Pair with fish dishes. £7.99 from Aldi.
Sol De Valencia Gewürztraminer 2024, Spain, 10.5% abv
Yes, this one comes from Spain where the warm soil produces a dry and fruity white. Find a palate of melon fruit, intense orange and lychee. £10.99 from Laithwaites Wine. https://www.laithwaites.co.uk/product/sol-de-valencia-gewurztraminer-2024/4470524
Les Arômes (De Herabauges) 2024, Val De Loire IGP, France, abv 8.5%

The reds:
Unearthed Kratosija 2023, Macedonia, Italy, abv 13.5%
Think cranberry and raspberry – 100% eponymous grapes give this wine a red berry and stone fruits palate with a tart edge. There is also a flash of pomegranate and spice. Overall a weighty, punchy tipple that pairs with heavier meat dishes. £6.99 from Aldi.
