Having styled the likes of music stars from Ella Henderson, James Arthur, Amelia Lily and Misha B to Tulisa, Little Mix and Kylie, award-winning celebrity hairdresser and 2012 British Hairdresser of the Year nominee, Jamie Stevens talks through the key Spring/Summer 2013 trend that shone through on the red carpet at The Brits 2013 last night – straight hair.

“After seasons of curls, waves and texture, polished straight hair is back to the forefront as seen on the S/S’13 catwalk at shows such as Lacoste, Celine, Emilio Pucci and Michael Kors. We saw lots of this on the red carpet at The Brits 2013 with stars such as Jessie J and model Jourdan Dunn showing off this trend to perfection.

To get that super sleek look it is all in the prep, so make sure you’re using smoothing shampoos and conditioners. Arm yourself with a good heat protective spray such as Matrix Design Pulse Iron In before using straightening irons and if you try to straighten too hair much at once this can result in ridges forming at the roots, so the thinner the section you take, the better the result. A great finishing product is Matrix Design Pulse Mix In Shine to add an ultra glossy finish”.

Also looking smoking on the red carpet was Taylor Swift, who wore a more textured version of the straight hair trend, with bangs grazing above her eyes and worn with care-free texture and volume.

Jamie says, “The beauty of this look is its simplicity and that it is easy to re-create. Rough blow-dry hair straight using Matrix Design Pulse Loosely Defined for that nonchalant texture. Once dry, take out random sections of hair and starting half way down the hair length, use ghd stylers to turn and twist the hair for tousled texture.

The key here is to blow-dry the fringe with a big round brush before the rest of the hair as it’s the focal point of this look, which really brings out Taylor’s eyes. Finish with a sprinkle of Matrix Design Pulse Mega Dust to rub into mid-lengths and ends for that flyaway texture and hairspray to hold”.

Another star playing on this trend was TV presenter Laura Whitmore, but progressed further than Taylor’s for added texture. To achieve this look Jamie says, “Blow-dry the hair in the same way as Swift’s but using a round brush and blow-drying the front area back to give root lift and natural movement. Use wider styling irons and taking random sections, loosely curl, flick or wave the hair from half way down, keeping the top area straight, finishing with serum to smooth out the texture”
