The team at Fake Bake and its award winning, pioneering and charitable CEO Sandra McClumpha want to simply reduce the amount of people getting skin cancer in the UK. This year, Fake Bake are again partnering with the skin charity RAFT (Restoration of Appearance and Function Trust) who carry out pioneering research into practical and affordable ways to save and repair skin – including a large research project on identifying how exposure to different parts of sunlight, especially UVA and viable light, are involved in triggering the damage which can lead later to skin cancer.

 

 

Dr Nick Kassouf, RAFT Post-doctoral Research Scientist at RAFT comments:

“Melanoma is the second most common cancer in young adults aged 15-34 and worryingly individuals in this age group may be those who will want to appear more tanned. It has been scientifically proven that sunbeds emit ultraviolet rays and can therefore promote skin cancers such as melanoma. Alternatives to sun bathing with sun protection such as spray tans in a salon can be expensive for young adults, therefore applying fake tans as a cream, represents a safe, affordable method, while still obtaining the tanned appearance that many of this age group desire. RAFT is in support of the Fake Bake Save Your Skin campaign who are highlighting publicly such an important issue.”

 

 

The ‘Save Your Skin’ program focuses on endorsing all safe tanning products – it is also about educating people about the affordable and effective tans out there on the beauty market which give you the same results as sun beds without risking your life. This campaign re-launch in May 2012 which is also Melanoma Month in the UK follows the recent media storm following London Fashion Week’s ban of sunbed tans. It also follows the 2010 Fake Bake campaign which forced the English Government into banning under 18’s using sunbeds – this day celebrated all of the campaign’s achievements as well as highlighting the work that still needs to be done in 2012.
