Best Places to Stay in Portugal for Families with Young Kids
Why Portugal is great for holidays. An entire coastline of beaches, sleepy fishing villages and no rowdy Balearic crowds make this an amazing choice for families. From the glamorous Algarve for your luxury stay in Portugal to the UNESCO awarded Duoro Valley and all the golf resorts and beachside hotels inbetween, there’s bound to be something that suits the family down to the ground.
When it comes to what kind of accommodation there is – you will be spoilt for choice as there are lots of family villa holiday options as well as your classic package holiday destinations. This is useful when planning a holiday as your traditional one bedroomed hotel room isn’t overly practical if you have several kids and/or want some escape or privacy as a couple. A home away from home – such as a villa offers much more practicalities of eating when you want, when you want it as well as bedrooms to cram the lil scamps into at the end of a long day so the grown ups can relax on the terrace.
Why it’s great for families with younger kids. Kids love the beaches, the sunshine and the pool and Portugal has many in great abundance so you can’t go wrong really.
What’s important when looking for a place to stay
Gated pools and grassy areas. When having young children racing around, the paved areas around swimming pools can be a little dangerous and worrysome for parents. Having a villa or complex where there are grassy areas for kids to hang out out, play, run around makes it easier on the minds of mums and dads. Another important factor is having a gateable pool to stop little feet paddling in when they aren’t supposed to.
Group complexes – eg trio of villas. If you have friends and cousins who may enjoy holidaying together then if you can get a group of villas in the same area – so you can have your privacy as a family – such as the Chinos collection in Portugal. Means you can get together around one communal pool – or have a pool area for the adults to enjoy and one for the kids. Saves any arguments!
All inclusive hotels. There really is something effortless about showing up at the airport and having your every need met – from transfers to turnovers and all the food, drinks and ice cream that you can eat – yum yum! No filling the fridge, late night dashes to the supermarket or constantly emptying your purse at the poolside snack bars.
What is there to do outside the accommodation? Portugal is awash with pretty beaches and artisan shops but kiddos aren’t that keen on anything that doesn’t involve a thrill. Waterparks, themeparks, dolphin boat rides, adventure parks and zoos are all scattered around the area depending on where your base is – there will be something to do that will keep everyone occupied. Even for the grown up kiddos – dads that love their golf will be spoilt for choice with the many courses in the region.
