THE FACTS

Casper, the bed in a box start-up that revolutionised the sleep industry, has announced the launch of the hotly-anticipated Casper Dog Bed in the UK; and as pups spend more than half their lives sleeping*, if any species deserves an outrageously comfortable sleep surface, it’s man’s best friend.

Designed for top dogs, by top dogs, using the same engineering team behind all of Casper’s sleep products, a  universally comfortable sleep surface for our much-loved four-legged friends was born. Eleven months of dog sleep studies, 460 hours of product laboratory testing and 110 prototypes later, the result is truly unique; a sleep environment that caters to canines’ natural behaviours. Just ask Fast Company who recently recognised the Casper Dog Bed with an Innovation by Design award in their 2017 Product category.

WHY THE CASPER DOG BED IS SOMETHING TO BARK ABOUT…

Dogs will dig it: Dogs scratch or dig before laying down. That’s an instinct they inherited from their wild ancestors, who would kick up dirt to find cooler ground and brush away debris before turning in for the night the surface features excess material on top to mimic the sensation of pawing at loose earth. Dig in, doggies.

Take shelter: There’s a reason pups like to squeeze into tight spaces. They’ve learned to seek refuge from predators, so they feel safest in enclosed areas. The supportive foam bolsters of the mattress create a safe space for dogs to lay their heads — literally and figuratively.

Damage control: Even the most well-behaved dogs have bad days. But no matter how rough they play, most dogs can’t rip through Casper’s durable cover material — it’s made with one of the strongest bonded microfibers available. It’s so tough, similar materials are used in performance footwear designed to withstand years of abuse.

Removable cover: The durable cover is easy to remove and machine wash.

Keeps its shape: The fortified construction won’t sink, slump, or sag over time.

Easy to clean: The nylon fibres in the cover are heat bonded, creating a slick barrier that’s practically impenetrable to fur.

Hidden zippers: Sewn-in pockets hide the metal zippers, so they won’t scratch your floors.

Sizes and colours: From the little to the large, the Casper Dog Bed comes in three sizes**; small (up to 13kg), medium (up to 27kg), and large (up to 40kg) – with each available in a blue, grey or sand colour.

Sleep on it, lounge on it, drool on it — if your pup doesn’t love the Casper Dog Bed, Casper will give you a full refund. Sounds just like another Casper product we know…

THE REVIEW

So we asked resident canine – Wilson the Beagle, what he thought of the dog bed.  He’s tested it for over a week now and he seems genuinely comfortable in it.  The rectangle shape seems to fit his shape almost exactly and he does love a good dig around before he settles down.  It’s stopped him digging around on my armchair anyway.

The fabric is comfortable but functional – Wilson is very much a comfort dog, he likes being under a blanket or on a pile of cushions so I’m glad the fabric is of comfort to him but also durable and easy to clean as we live in the country without a hallway so he’s always tracking in dirt, wet paws and other detritous.

It was interesting assembling the bed, my DH asked if it was a Krypton Factor trial!  It goes together easily but doesn’t happen instantly so don’t expect a bed you pull out and it’s ready.  Takes about 15 minutes to assemble but I suspect it’s this aspect that makes it more comfortable than other beds which buckle and bunch eventually.

Compared to a large proportion of dog beds it’s more expensive but I except this is on a cost per use basis – Wilson is nearly 6 and I’ve had over 20 beds for him in his time.  Maybe this one will last lots longer!  We also love the groovy toy that came with it – there’s a debate as to whether it’s a waffle or a pretzel but he’s had a few good games with it already.  A nice touch from the brand.
