Choosing a Greenhouse – What You Need to Know

So, you’ve been blessed with having green thumbs, or perhaps you are just interested in improving your gardening skills. There’s only so much that you can grow outside in your garden, which is why a lot of people opt to get aluminium or wooden greenhouses, as they can grow a lot more than just your bog-standard garden. In an ideal world, you would be able to grow whatever you like, wherever you want to.

However, a lot of vegetables or fruits or plants need to be grown in certain temperatures, which is why a greenhouse comes in handy. Depending on what you are planning on using it for, you will first need to determine what size you need – how big is your garden and how much are you planning on growing? Keep on reading for more information on how to pick the right greenhouse for you.

What Are You Planning on Using it for?

Greenhouses allow the gardener to extend the growing season. Greenhouses can create a protected growing environment for tender plants and seedlings. If you have the space for it and cost is not an issue, then the growing capacity is likely to affect your decision on what size you would like your greenhouse to be.

If you are a keen amateur gardeners you may decide to get a small greenhouse (that is 6′ wide by 10′ long), while gardeners who require a much bigger growing capacity might opt for a large greenhouse (for example 10′ wide by 14′ long). This is assuming that you have the budget for it, and that your garden is also big enough. However, this is not always the case in the real world. So, you first need to consider how much you are planning on growing and what you can afford (in terms of money and space).

Where you Should Place it

This is also a really important factor as you need to make sure that wherever you put your greenhouse is in the best position. Many “textbooks” suggest that the longest side of your greenhouse should be fully exposed to the sun from the south. However, this isn’t always easy to do, particularly as smaller greenhouses are basically square. So, you shouldn’t really worry too much about that. However, generally a greenhouse should get full sun

To make things a bit easier for you, so long as it is about 7’ to 8’ tall, the roof will catch the direct sunlight, which will be enough to warm-up your greenhouse. You should also make sure that your greenhouse is protected from the wind as well. All greenhouses, even the best ones, are vulnerable to strong winds, so it’s important to place them next to some sort of protection, and if there isn’t already one there, consider placing a fence or hedge to help protect it.

Visual Appearance

Many gardeners will care about the visual appearance of their greenhouse, as they obviously don’t want them to stand out in their garden. They need to blend into the existing landscape. Luckily, greenhouses are no longer eyesores and things that must be hidden at the bottom of the garden. Most companies will offer greenhouses that come in a wide array of attractive colours. So, you can easily get the right one for you. People don’t realise how much people must think about what sort of greenhouse they need before they purchase one.
