The Tastiest Gin-Based Cocktails

By  |  0 Comments

The past few years have witnessed gin become the ‘in’ spirit to indulge in amongst men and women alike due to its versatility as well as its perceived level of classiness. Obviously, the traditional ‘go-to’ is the classic G&T, served with a fruity accompaniment (or cucumber, for a more refreshing taste and depending on the tonic used).

But why not step outside the box a little and try pairing gin with some other mixers to create a tasty cocktail that’s just as classy and tasty? The key is to balance the sweet and sour flavours, include ice where possible, and always ensure you have fresh garnishes prepared.

Here are some of our favourite gin-based cocktails for you to try!

Bramble

A super simple but summery cocktail, the bramble is short and fragrant. It consists of dry gin – which can be sourced from some of the excellent distilleries included on distoo.co.uk – sugar syrup, lemon juice, crème de mure, and fresh (or frozen, if the day is hot) berries with a twist of lemon zest to garnish.

Negroni

An Italian classic, this is always a popular cocktail choice. A mix of gin, sweet vermouth, and Campari is poured over ice, stirred together, and then garnished with orange zest. Quick, simple, and yet powerfully tasty, this is only for those with a strong constitution.

Fogcutter

If you’re looking for that extra hit of alcohol, this is the cocktail for you! Combine gin with brandy and rum (you can test this out with dark, spiced, or white rum according to your preference), and freshly squeezed orange and lemon juice, with the almond syrup. Shake it up with ice, pour, and then add a touch of sherry on top. Garnish? Completely up to you.

Gin Fizz

A sweet and tart cocktail for those with a bit of taste for sour drinks! Nice and simple, you simply mix gin with lemon juice, sugar syrup (or maple syrup, if you want a more ‘candied’ flavour), and soda water. To get the traditional frothy top, whisk up egg white and shake together with the rest of the ingredients, then pour over ice.

Greyhound

This cocktail has a beautifully summery look to it, almost recreating a sunset. Tart and refreshing with a heavy dose of citrusy sour notes, this is a simple cocktail formed of just gin with grapefruit juice and sugar syrup. Garnish with a wedge of grapefruit and – if you’re feeling super fancy – a sprig of rosemary. Yum!

Gin Gin Mule

As the name suggests, this cocktail is a bit of a twist on the traditional Moscow Mule. Alongside the gin base, you’ve got the ginger beer and lime of a traditional mule, paired with the muddle of mint and sugar syrup that a mojito is famous for. Balanced and refreshing, this one is deceptively tasty – you’ll forget you’re drinking alcohol! Garnish with lime and mint leaves to finish.

Hanky Panky

Despite the name, this is actually a very grown-up, sophisticated gin-based cocktail for you to try – but be warned, it’s more suitable for little sips than big gulps. Balancing sweet and bitter flavours together, it’s a twist on a martini featuring just three ingredients: gin, sweet vermouth, and Fernet-Branca liqueur. Garnish with a twist of orange zest and enjoy!
