1.2 million adults forced to holiday with parents because they cannot afford to pay for one by themselves

Parents having to shell out £933.39 to take their grown up kids away

As the miserable weather continues and thoughts turn to a week in the sun, new research from VoucherCodes.co.uk has revealed over 4.4 million* UK adults are having to swallow their pride and jet off with their parents because they can’t afford to pay for a holiday themselves.

One in ten (11 per cent) 18 – 34 year olds in the ‘Boomerang Generation’ admitted they will be going away with their parents this summer as they are too out of pocket to pay for their own holiday. Furthermore, over a third (34 per cent) of young professionals admit they’ll be splitting the cost of a holiday with their parents to afford their sunshine break this year.

The rise of ‘Boomerang Holidays’ is putting a financial strain on parents who find themselves forced to fork out an average of £933.39 to cover the costs of taking their grown-up offspring on holiday. Accommodation (£280.15) and flights (£219.63) are the biggest outlay, while put-on Mums and Dads also find themselves bankrolling meals (£167.57) and hefty bar bills (£124.14) for their boomerang-holiday takers during the holiday.

Parents in Aberdeen are most likely to have to stump-up extra cash to fund their offspring’s holiday with nearly a quarter (23 per cent) of ‘Boomerang Adults’ in the Scottish city relying on their parents to take them abroad.

Duncan Jennings, Co-founder of VoucherCodes.co.uk says: “Our research shows the phenomenon of the boomerang generation isn’t just limited to adults living at home with their parents. Boomerang holiday takers are relying on their parents to pay for every aspect on the holiday, from flights to food, meaning the cost quickly mount up.

“For parents saddled with paying to take their grown-up kids away, there are lots of tips and tricks to help reduce costs. Timing is crucial in securing a bargain; many companies offer the biggest discounts at the start of the month whilst big money-off vouchers tend to only be live for a few days.
