Bright eyes for blue skies

As we enter the summer months, it’s time to start planning our beach holidays, festival weekends and summer evening BBQs. However, adjusting to the warmer weather can leave our bodies, and particularly our eyes, in need of some TLC, so here’s optometrist Lara Hefson’s summer guide to bright eyes in time for the blue skies…

Days spent squinting in the sun can take their toll on your peepers. Summer holidays are packed full of things that irritate your eyes- sun, chlorine, air conditioning, suncream, shampoo and sand, so I always recommend that people take eye drops with them in case their eyes need a pick me up . That way you don’t need to worry about trying to explain eye drops in a foreign language!”

To keep your eyes sparkly and bright in your holiday snaps, try MURINE Bright & Moist Eyes, formulated with a brightener to give super-white, bright eyes and two moisturisers. This product comes in a liquid gel, which helps the drops to  stay in the eye for longer. Available from Boots, Superdrug, Tesco, Waitrose and pharmacies nationwide priced £4.07 for 15ml.

Flights

Travelling by plane is very dehydrating. The air conditioning and altitude can leave your eyes dry and puffy, which generally gets worse when you arrive at your chosen destination, due to the change in climate. The best thing to do is keep well hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Also I would advise stocking up on MURINE Refresh & Soothe Eye Mist, which is small enough for hand-luggage”.

This gentle mist is sprayed onto closed eyelids where, after a few blinks, it travels into the eye without flooding it. Perfect for subtle use on the go, and small enough to fit into any pocket, purse or passport holder! Suitable for even the most squeamish of people, and for the whole family. Available from Tesco stores, Waitrose stores and independent pharmacies nationwide priced £9.99  for 15ml/300 sprays.

Festivals

Late nights, bright lights, alcohol and smoky tents can leave your eyes dry and tired, as can the early morning sunrise after a sleepless night in a tent. Eye drops are perfect for festivals- they’re small, easy to use and stop your eyes from drying out. They also help soothe them if you’re feeling tired and run-down, which helps prevent further problems developing when you come home”.

So when packing your rucksack and tent this summer, make sure you pop in a bottle of MURINE Dry & Tired Eyes, specially formulated with two powerful lubricants that lock in moisture whilst refreshing eyes and soothing discomfort.

Available from Boots, Superdrug, Tesco, Waitrose and pharmacies nationwide priced £4.07 for 15ml.

BBQs

More than fifteen per cent of the UK’s population suffer from hayfever and pollen experts have predicted a shorter, but stronger season this June. Lazy afternoons turning into summer evenings outside leave our eyes vulnerable to the plants and pollens in the garden, which can leave them itchy and irritated, made worse by the smoke from the BBQ. I would recommend Sodium Cromoglicate drops which prevent the allergy reaction”.

To stop itchy, red and watery eyes in their tracks, try prescription strength Murine Hayfever Relief Eye Drops with Sodium Cromoglicate which reduces the body’s response to hayfever by stopping the production of histamines. Available from Tesco, Superdrug, Rowlands and pharmacies nationwide priced £4.99 for 10ml.

Contact lens wearers

Contact lens wearers can really suffer in the summer as the weather can dry their eyes and irritate their lenses. Find an eye drop suitable for contact lenses to help keep them lubricated and comfortable”.

MURINE Contacts Refresh & Clean Eye Drops help keep your lenses clean, clear and your eyes feeling comfortable. For use whilst wearing lenses, the special formulation removes protein, fat deposits and atmospheric particles that can build up during the day causing irritation and fogginess. The gentle refreshing drops also re-wet, lubricate and moisten for enhanced lens wearing comfort. Available from Boots, Superdrug, Tesco, Waitrose and pharmacies nationwide priced £4.07 for 15ml. Suitable for use with all types of contact lenses.
