Today’s mother is busier than ever before. That is just one of the facts of life we have had to resign ourselves to. It isn’t only the economy, but that is a huge part of the reason so many mothers are joining the workforce. Sometimes it’s a matter of woman waiting longer to get married and have families, which means she is already well into a professional career before having children. If you are a busy mom at your wits’ end, you might be in need of these four tips sure to keep even the busiest of moms sane.

1. Set Aside One Day for Cooking and Cleaning

The first thing you can do for yourself is to set aside one day, and one day only, for major cooking and cleaning. If done right, there is no reason to come home each night only to do laundry, cook dinner, plop the kids in the bath, put them to bed and then lay things out in the morning. That is way too time-consuming for the busy mom, so by doing a week’s worth of cooking and cleaning all in one day, you can cut out at least half the time spent each evening after work.

2. Plan Meals a Month in Advance

So, how can you cook for seven days all in one? It’s easy if you learn how to plan meals a month in advance. Check out the monthly meal calendars on Pocket Change Gourmet and you’ll find it easy to plan ahead. Casseroles, stews and soups make wonderful evening meals and all can be prepared and stored safely in your fridge or freezer. Take them out at night, pop them in the oven and voila! You have a meal while you’re seeing to other chores. You might even want to put soups and stews in the slow cooker before you leave for work. They are already prepared so the low setting is fine and they’ll be hot and yummy by the time you are ready to eat that evening.

3. Don’t Be Afraid to Delegate Chores

Some moms find it easier just to do things themselves than to nag at the kids to do their chores. This is a huge mistake! Not only are you not teaching them to grow into responsible adults, but you are putting too much work on yourself when simple things like taking out the garbage or unloading the dishwasher can be handled well, even by elementary school students. If you need help learning to delegate, there are plenty of parenting sites online more than willing to give you the advice you need – and the encouragement to stick to it! If you have any doubts, look at what some men do to get their children doing chores when told.

4. Take One Evening a Week for Yourself

Finally, always set aside one evening a week for yourself. Do something you enjoy and don’t let anything interfere! Of course, if there is a major emergency, it stands to reason you can’t have your night off, but you can trade it for another night during the week to make up for it. You need time to relax, refresh and recharge, so take that time. You deserve it and you will find that the other days don’t seem so long and tedious.

There are a million and one ways to make your life a little less hectic, so take advantage of what other women have done when walking in your shoes. Speaking of shoes, you won’t get far if you are too exhausted to take another step, so tread wisely and you’ll go far.
