How to Create a Simple yet Stylish Wardrobe

By  |  0 Comments

How many of us have wardrobes and drawers that are bursting at the seams with clothes we hardly wear? In fact, most of us only regularly wear about 10 percent of the clothing we own. How do we end up with so many clothes that are unsuitable? Much of it comes down to impulse buying, or from not thoroughly understanding our own sense of style. If you are looking for easy-to-implement ideas on how to simplify your wardrobe and gain back some valuable space, this guide gives you some helpful tips to try out today.

Understand Your Style
If someone asked you, how would you describe your sense of style? An excellent place to start is to pick three words to describe the clothes that make you feel good when you wear them; for example, ‘comfortable,’ ‘colourful’ or ‘fitted.’ Then, only buy clothes that fit that criterion.
Another option is to create a mood board, where you can pin any outfits that you like the look of, either online or on your phone. Doing so will help you get an overall picture of your sense of style.

Don’t Duplicate!
There are wardrobe essentials that we all need, no matter what our style. Items such as black and white t-shirts and vests, a good pair of jeans and a little black dress are all useful. However, once you have those things already in your wardrobe, avoid buying more of them when you see them in the shops. There is no reason to have several tops that are similar to each other or more than a couple of pairs of blue jeans. Unless an item has worn out or lost its shape, you just don’t need to buy more.

Be Ruthless!
Simplify your wardrobe by thinning out the things you don’t wear, and keeping the things you do. Get a large bag and fill it! A good rule to go by is that if you haven’t worn an item in the last 12 months, then it has to go. Take your unwanted clothing to your local charity shop and put it to good use.

Buy Clothes that Suit Your Shape
Have you ever bought a top that was a little too small, just because you liked it and thought it would fit once you’ve lost those stubborn few pounds? Or bought a pair of low rise jeans, only for your underwear (or worse) to show every time you bend over? If you want to simplify your wardrobe, then choose clothes that flatter your body shape and fit well. Curvier women should shop at brands like Froxx, for example, or there are a number of stores for women who are tall or petite.

Having a simple wardrobe makes getting ready each day a pleasure, as you are never stuck for an outfit. Your core items work well with the more frivolous one-off pieces, giving you a unique look that you can rock wherever you go. It also helps you feel better when you declutter, so no excuses! Create an organised wardrobe with pieces that you will actually wear!
