Are we a couple yet?

In the early days of a relationship, transitioning from going on dates to being a couple can be a confusing time. You might have decided that you like the man you’re seeing, but you don’t want to put too much pressure on them by jumping the gun and saying that you’re now an official item, that you’re ‘going out’. You might want to tell your friends and family that you’re in a new relationship, but you’re not sure that your date would see it that way.

If this is the case, it’s time to have a chat with each other and find out if they feel as ‘into’ you as you are to them. The difference between dating and going out can be difficult to define at the start of a relationship, but the clearer the communication is between you and him, the better it will be for both of you.

Talk about commitment

The real crunch comes when you move from seeing someone to committing to them. This doesn’t necessarily mean marriage, a mortgage and babies, but it does mean agreeing to date only each other and committing to the relationship. But if you’re not at the stage where you’ve agreed to date exclusively, then you’re still just dating and free to see other people too. By being frank with each other, you’ll avoid a lot of angst and worrying about whether he feels the same way as you.

What are you looking for?

Before talking to your man about what kind of a relationship you’re in, give some thought to what you really want. Have you asked yourself what you are looking for and whether this person will be able to give that to you? If you’re ready to settle down and get into a long-term relationship, you need a willing partner to do that with. Perhaps they’re just enjoying the fun of dating and not looking for anything serious. Are the two of you compatible or do you clash over little things?

You will probably be able to surmise a lot from the conversations you’ve already had with each other and the way he acts around you. If you think you could be right for each other, have you thought about your longer-term compatibility; how do your star signs line up with each other, for example? Read this article from TheCircle and you’ll discover the typical characteristics of a Gemini man and the other star signs he’s compatible with. While not everyone conforms to their star sign characteristics, it can be a useful exercise to check out your date’s astrological character traits if you’re looking for clues into his potential relationship psyche.

Communicate openly

Once you’re clear in your mind as to what you want from this man, the next step is to discuss how you feel with him. Although we’ve all become used to texting and emailing, with digital communications, there’s too much room for miscommunication and misinterpretation. There’s nothing better than a face to face talk when you’re discussing affairs of the heart.

Ask your date directly if they want to take your relationship to the next level and make it an exclusive one. Whatever their answer, at least you’ll be clear about where you stand. Try not to pressure them into a decision – they may not have been doing as much thinking as you have. If they’re not sure after a few days, though, it may be a sign that there isn’t much of a future there.

If you’re not happy with the status quo of just dating the man who’s come into your life, you need to be brave and have that conversation with him. You may be nervous about disrupting a good thing that you’ve got going, but at the end of the day, if that’s what happens, then it was destined to be short-lived anyway. It’s better to know where you both stand than worrying about it and not actually enjoying the time you spend together.
