Home Security Tips for Women Living Alone

If you’re a woman living on your own, making sure that your home is safe and secure is probably a must. Although it shouldn’t be this way, you hear plenty of horror stories about break ins and robberies on the news, and unfortunately for us ladies who live by ourselves, it’s a sad fact that many criminals think we’re an easy target. However, just because you’re female and living on your own doesn’t mean that you can’t be just as safe as you would if you had a big, strong man living with you – after all, who says women need men to protect us? We’ve put together a list of great tips to keep yourself and your home safe.

Locks

It goes without saying that you should always keep your windows and doors locked when you’re not at home – and that doesn’t just go for women living on their own, it’s a common sense rule that applies to everybody. However, it’s also a good idea to keep your doors locked even when you’re at home, and if you have a large window, don’t leave it open when you’re in other parts of the house. Don’t Advertise to Thieves

When you live on your own, it’s understandable why you might want to invite people over, but it’s important that you’re careful in the way that you do this so you don’t end up inviting the wrong people. For example, you might think that it’s pretty harmless to post a Facebook status asking any of your friends to pop round for a cup of tea and a chat if they’re free as you’re bored and on your own – but if you don’t make sure that the status is private anybody could see it – and you could end up being targeted. Although it sounds scary, all it takes is a little extra vigilance to make sure anything you post online is private to ensure that this kind of thing doesn’t happen to you.

Good Lighting

Having good lighting around your home is sensible if you want to prevent home crime, even if you’re not a female living by yourself. Have an automatic light that switches on each time somebody approaches the front of your home, and light up any dark areas around your home that could potentially be a haven for thieves to hide. The more well-lit the exterior of your home is, the more put off thieves will be – after all, once they’re seen, they’re caught! Fake security cameras also act as a great deterrent – they’re much cheaper than the real thing, and nobody needs to know that they don’t actually work.
